The shared spaces.

Each store watches its own door. The center, or the merchants on a shared block, have to think about everything else: walkways, seating, the garage and the service corridors behind the stores. Those shared spaces are where problems settle in.

A visible officer.

Having an officer moving through the common areas changes how the place feels. They keep an eye out for organized theft and loitering, help shoppers and give merchants one number to call.

Coverage is usually heaviest from the afternoon through close.

Garages and closing.

Garages are where shoppers and staff feel most exposed, especially when it gets dark early. Regular passes, attention to lighting and an officer around at close all help.

After hours, live camera monitoring and patrol visits can keep watch on storefront glass and service doors.

Getting merchants involved.

Give every tenant the officer’s schedule and a number to call, and ask them to report problems. Reports go to management by email, which builds a record when the same issue keeps coming back.

The holidays.

More shoppers means more problems. Most centers add hours from late November into January and scale back after. Month-to-month terms make that simple.
